Between a 30-day Cape-routed ocean leg and a $4-per-kilo air bill sits a third option most Indian shippers never get quoted: sail three days to Dubai, fly the rest. The world's most established sea-air corridor happens to start a short hop from Nhava Sheva.
How the corridor works
Ocean leg: West India → Jebel Ali
Days 0–4A short 3–5 day sail from Nhava Sheva or Mundra to Jebel Ali — the cheap, high-capacity leg, unaffected by Red Sea routing.
Transfer: Jebel Ali → Dubai World Central
Days 4–6Cargo deconsolidates in the bonded Dubai South corridor, trucks roughly an hour to DWC/DXB, and is re-built onto air pallets. The bonded link means no UAE customs entry — it's one through-movement.
Air leg: Dubai → Europe / US / Africa
Days 6–12Out on Emirates SkyCargo and partner freighter/belly capacity — one of the deepest air networks on earth. Chargeable weight applies only to this leg.
Where it prices: the half-and-half rule
The corridor's marketing shorthand — half the cost of pure air, half the transit of pure ocean — holds up reasonably well in practice: typically 30–50% cheaper than all-air, 40–60% faster than all-ocean. On India→Europe in the Cape era, that means roughly:
| Mode | Door-to-door transit | Relative cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure ocean (via Cape) | ~30–40+ days | 1× | Planned replenishment, dense cargo |
| Sea-air via Dubai | ~10–15 days | ~2–4× | Mid-season replenishment, missed ocean cutoffs, margin-sensitive urgency |
| Pure air | ~3–6 days | ~8–15× | Launches, perishables, emergencies |
When we quote it — and when we don't
- Quote it: fashion and apparel replenishment mid-season; e-commerce restocks; cargo that missed an ocean cutoff but can't justify pure air; Red Sea contingency when ocean ETAs blow out.
- Think twice: very dense cargo (the air leg's volumetric advantage disappears), fragile goods sensitive to double handling, and shipments where two extra handoffs complicate insurance.
- Always: document both legs properly — it's one quote and one liability chain with us, but verify that before booking it anywhere.
